The unit
One “word” is five characters including spaces. 200 correct characters in a minute is 40 WPM. Hotplug’s live number uses characters that match the prompt, so a sloppy burst does not inflate speed.
Rough bands
- Below 30 — still learning the board. Accuracy first. Speed arrives when you stop looking at the keys.
- 30–40 — functional. Fine for chat, painful for long drafts.
- 40–55 — typical for people who type every day at work and are not training for it.
- 55–75 — strong office speed. You are no longer the bottleneck in a meeting notes window.
- 75–90 — practiced. Usually a full-size keyboard and a layout you have lived in for years.
- 90+ — hobbyist or professional territory. On a 60-second common-word test this is already a lot; quotes with punctuation will drop you.
Accuracy is the real score
90 WPM at 82% accuracy is slower in the document than 60 WPM at 98%. Backspaces are work. If you care about the number, hold accuracy above 95% and ignore anything that required a smear of mistakes.
What this test is not
It is not stenography, not a programming test, and not your phone keyboard. Common English words in a browser input are a clean, repeatable drill. Compare against yourself on the same machine. Hotplug stores that comparison in localStorage only.
